For this week’s Client Spotlight, we had the pleasure of chatting with Bonterra Building & Design
based in Austin, Texas.
We are a boutique custom home build company who focus on a few select projects each year both new construction and complete home renovation. Our building technics, design flexibility, architectural diversity in combination with our construction and finance experience are key factors that differentiate us. I have over 20+ years in construction and my wife, Brooke has over a decade experience prior to Bonterra with a Global Fortune company in Corporate Accounting and Finance. The accounting and finance business acumen she brings is priceless and the clients feel confident knowing what might be one of their largest investments is being handled appropriately with transparent real time cost updates and projections. Bonterra delivers undivided personal attention to both construction and financial aspects, which are equally important to a successful project.
I guess you could say building is in my genes. My father was an engineer and my mother had a great eye for design so we remodeled every home we owned. Growing up, I had a family friend who’s father built very custom homes in Houston. Walking through those homes made a lasting impression on me at a young age, I was hooked. I could not imagine doing anything else and would still be doing this even if I did not have to work. Having my own custom home building company was the ultimate goal but I could not do it alone. Starting our own company allowed for my wife to pursue her dream job as well in interiors. Ultimately it was a win win for both of us.
The West Austin Estate project http://www.bonterrabd.com/WestAustinVideo.php is one-of-a-kind. The property is the old Patterson Ranch homestead, which the current owners are transforming into a Modern day retreat. We made improvements to the main house, and built a new tennis pavilion, guest house, and separate gym structure along with extensive pool renovation and outdoor living areas. The main house internal structure has dramatic Pennsylvanian Barn beams from the 1800’s. Although the structures have a modern architectural style, the client still wanted continuity with farmhouse elements in new structures. In the gym, we used left over beams from the barn to add interest to the vaulted ceiling. For the guest house, we went with reclaimed barn wood for the cabinetry. The challenging aspect was that they wanted very little reveal and no hardware on the cabinetry.The integrity of the barn wood from Reclaimed Designworks and the quality allowed our cabinet maker to create a wall of wood just as the designer and client had envisioned. The theme speaks for itself as you move from building to building and you would interpret the wood as being all from one. We could not have done it without Reclaimed Designworks barn wood.
Working with Reclaimed Designworks was effortless. They are very knowledgeable on the various wood products and the end result exceeded our clients expectations. Equally important, the material we purchased was milled and planed perfectly which allowed the cabinetmaker to lower his price point. As anyone knows, reclaimed material can be more costly due to its historical integrity, but it being premium grade allowed for the labor price point to drop making up the difference.
We were awarded LEED Platinum Certification (1 of out 7 in Austin area) and 5 Star Green Building on another project we recently partnered with Reclaimed DesignWorks on.
