Our inventory of hand hewn beams include exterior beams that have been exposed to the elements and have a weathered gray or brown look and interior hand hewn beams that have been sheltered from the weather and have retained the natural patina of the wood.
Hand hewn beams were trees or logs that were squared by hand with an adze axe or broad axe. This method of prepping beams was prevalent prior to the widespread use of saw mills. Hand hewn beams will often have mortise and tenon pockets. They typically are reclaimed from old barns and warehouses and will have original hand hewn axe marks and old original face patina on all four sides. We hand select every one of our beams for premium quality and aesthetic appeal so you can be confident using them as part of your project.
